Tado has arrived
Following on from this, the kit arrived yesterday. Two boxes, with very ‘apple like’ packaging, all the way from Munich. As I currently have a wireless thermostat I needed the extension kit too. The initial process was very simple and all handled through tado’s very slick website.
- Create an account at tado.
- Tell tado about your current heating setup including manufacturer/model of the existing thermostat, controller and boiler.
- Register the new tado devices – extension kit, thermostat and ‘gateway/dongle’ thing.
- Download the app onto the various mobile phones in the house.
- Wait for the engineer to come and install it.
The Extension kit is roughly the size of my existing controller and fits on a standard UK backplate:
The thermostat is around 4″ square and when powered up shows the current room temp in a cool white display on the front.
The gateway/dongle needs to be plugged into your network. Tado say to plug it into your router but I have it in my switch. This is tied to the account you setup with tado and is the device used to communicate with tado’s servers to utilise your settings and provide the location based services.
The final piece of the jigsaw is to download the app to your phone, log in to your account and then tado knows where you are in relation to the house. The further you move away the more tado drops the heating. Over time it learns the heating/cooling characteristics of the house and so as you move closer again it knows how long it needs to bring the temperature up again.
The app and webpage also give you some funky looking graphs and estimated savings on your heating bill. The engineer is coming on the 20th to connect the tado to my boiler so then I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and seeing how it does. Further reports to follow…
